The Fiji Water Foundation says its water filter project with the NGO Give Clean Water, has been designed to provide a sustainable, long-term solution to the country’s clean water problems.

Many Fiji communities lack reliable clean water resources, resulting in high levels of water-borne diseases, including typhoid.

In an effort to eliminate those diseases, the Foundation and Give Clean Water are working together to donate filters to the areas hardest hit by the floods in early 2009, most recently in Ba’s Votua Village.

The Foundation has been established by the bottled water exporter Fiji Water and director, David Roth, says the project’s not intended to provide just a quick fix.

“The filters actually present a solution that can be utilised, maintained, by individual families. We didn’t want to be a part of any project that would create something that would, in effect, require more work than was rational from an individual family.”

David Roth says the device removes 99.99 percent of all bacteria and protozoa from virtually any water source.
