15/06/10 - Rotary brings clean water to school
Water woes at Naiyala High School in Wainibuka, is a thing of the past thanks to the help of the Rotary Club.
The club’s Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation installed piped water at the school after donating two 10,000 litre water tanks and a water pump.
The aid cost $15,000.
Speaking to parents, teachers and villagers, foundation director, Rotary Club Suva East president, Mark Matthews, said that they were pleased to help the school.
This was echoed by foundation manager, Joel Sahai.
“Since its establishment in 1975, Naiyala High School in Tailevu North has been having water problems,” Mr Sahai said.
“This is no more, 170 students and teachers now have safe and clean drinking water.
“This is another project undertaken by the Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation.
“This include sourcing water from a natural spring catchment which is pumped into the two water tanks and piped to the school as well as the 12 teachers’ quarters,” he said.
Mr Sahai said the project was the culmination of other stakeholders funding.
“The Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation, together with the FIJI Water Foundation and the Westpac Banking Corporation are the three local donors which provide annual funding to the Rotary Water Foundation.”
Established in October 2007, the foundation has been helping rural communities throughout Fiji in providing sustainable and safe drinking water.
