03/02/09 - Fiji Water offers more help
Fiji Water is saddened and shocked at the devastation and suffering caused by the recent flooding.
The Fiji Water president, John Cochran, visited Fiji last week to see first- hand the damages done by the flooding. He said, the entire Fiji Water family continues to stand ready to assist Fiji and have announced several relief measures to assist the people of this country.
Fiji Water has announced a contribution of over $900,000 for the flood relief to be coordinated through the Fiji Water Foundation.
Fiji Water is committed to working in partnership with the government and in parallel with the efforts of the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to bring these and other resources to the people of Fiji who were affected by the recent flooding.
Besides this substantial cash contribution, Fiji Water has also air freighted 5x 21,000 litre water bags from New Zealand to supply water to flood stricken areas. Fiji Water trucks are being used to supply bulk Fiji Water to those in need.
For past five days, Fiji Water trucks have been delivering water to Ba, Nadi and Sigatoka areas. Immediately after the flooding, Fiji Water provided over 80,000 litres of water to Red Cross, hospitals, DISMAC, evacuation centers and needy communities from Rakiraki to Rewa.
It also facilitated the urgent installation of back up water supply tanks at four Tavua and Ba health centers.
Fiji Water’s director of external affairs and development, David Roth, also said that Fiji Water has made a commitment of more than $145,000 for urgent repair work and provision of educational materials and services to 26 western schools, and has just today purchased over 40,000 exercise and study books to provide directly to affected schools and students.
Fiji Water employees are also engaged in the volunteer program to help Red Cross, Rotary and Save the Children Fund in relief work. Mr. Roth said that Fiji Water is committed to assist the people of Fiji in times of need and will continue to stand by Fiji and her people in difficult and challenging times.
