19/03/09 - Fiji Water helps youths
A mineral water company has donated $21,050 to the Interim Government as assistance to youths who were affected by the floods in January.
Fiji Water, through its foundation yesterday presented the cheque to the Department of Youth and Sports which will be utilised by the affected children in the Western division to invest in the future during the National Youth Day celebration.
The donation will purchase the farming equipment, seedlings, fencing, and greenhouse materials necessary to help the 14 primary and secondary schools from Ra to the Sigatoka Valley recover their agricultural self-sufficiency.
Fiji Water executive David Roth said although the immediate effects of the flood have faded from memory, many schools and communities were still struggling to make ends meet. “Reliance upon government rations of rice, dhal and flour means reduced access to vitamins and mineral that growing children need,” Mr Roth said.
“Fiji Water is proud to be help out the unfortunate ones.”
Ministry for Youth and Sports permanent secretary Filimone Jitoko said they really appreciated Fiji Water’s contribution. More than 4,330 students attending the 14 schools throughout the West will benefit from these schools.
This contribution is part of Fiji Water’s substantial ongoing financial commitment to provide short, mid, and long-term flood relief to the country.
The company has delivered more than one million litres of water to rural Ba and has installed water tanks at four Western health centres.
It has also supplied exercise books and basic repairs to 26 schools, emergency food rations to more than 560 families while also donating to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
