19/03/09 - Fiji Water gives to Youth Day
FIJI Water Foundation yesterday donated $21,050 to the Department of Youth and Sports for National Youth Day celebrations next week.
The 2009 National Youth Day celebrations on March 23 will feature youth at schools in flood affected areas where they will be encouraged to reinvest in their future by planting and improving their damaged school gardens.
A statement from Fiji Water Foundation said the contribution was a part of its “substantial ongoing financial commitment to provide short, mid, and long-term flood relief to the country.”
“FIJI Water continues to deliver bulk water relief throughout rural Ba and has to date delivered more than one million litres of water to those in need,” it said.
In addition, the company has installed auxiliary water tanks at four western health centres, has supplied exercise books and basic repairs to 26 schools, and has supplied emergency food rations to more than 560 families in flood affected areas.
Permanent Secretary for Youth, Filipe Jitoko who received the cheque on behalf of the department said the donation would enable 14 primary and secondary schools from Ra to the Sigatoka Valley.
The money will be used to purchase farming equipment, seedlings, fencing and greenhouse materials that are necessary for their agricultural self-sufficiency recovery.
It is believed that more than 4,330 students will benefit from these school gardens.
Meanwhile, the FIJI Water Foundation is preparing to announce the first recipients of grant funding in 2009 in the following weeks.
FIJI Water and its charitable foundation are both focused on providing development assistance in the priority areas of education, health, water, sanitation, and infrastructure throughout all of Fiji.
