31/08/07 - Safe, clean water in the pipeline
Thousands of people living in rural areas will soon have access to clean and safe drinking water.
This will be made possible through a water project initiative to be carried out by Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation in conjunction with their partners.
Foundation chief executive Resina Koroi said the project was to allow people to have access to safe drinking water.
The Foundation is working with their major sponsors, Golden Manufacturers Limited, Natural Waters of Viti Ltd (Fiji Water), Vodafone ATH Foundation and Westpac Banking Corporation.
Ms Koroi said they would start working with the communities in the North followed by the Yasawa Group and the western side.
"We would like other interested communities in need of having access to safe and clean drinking water to send their submission so we can have a look at it and be able to help them out," she said.
Ms Koroi said the sponsors were donating about $150,000 each for the project and they were grateful for the support.
Ms Koroi said this represented a new era in the way various organisational and corporate bodies could work with reputable non-government organisations to contribute to the development of communities in a sustainable manner.
Nine Rotary clubs in Fiji which are working with other Rotary clubs in the world will be involved in the implementation of the five-year project to be launched on September 13.
